WHAT IS HARBOR HOUSE?

·         Harbor House Collaborative serves chronically homeless individuals, who are in recovery from substance-related disorders, by providing a safe place to live and intensive services as they work towards health, sobriety, and self-sufficiency.

·         Harbor House is a safe, sober place for recovering alcoholics and substance abusers, who have been homeless, to live while they receive treatment and restoration to health and dignity.

·         Harbor House manages customized care, tailored to the individual, including case management, advocacy, substance abuse treatment and transitional housing.

WHY NOW?

·         A 2002 community-wide needs assessment and several community forums identified substance abuse services for those without resources as a critical need in El Paso County.

·         A small number of homeless alcoholics cost the community around $3 million each year in emergency room visits, emergency transport, etc.

·         Research shows success in other communities that provide customized care and housing to this disenfranchised group.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

·         We place 20-30 individuals annually in a highly structured therapeutic environment at a cost of approximately $1,670 per month per person with an average stay of six months.  Costs compare favorably to successful programs in Minneapolis and Denver that range from $2,100 to $2,500 per month per person.

·         Outcomes show a significant return on investment.
